ISLAMABAD, July 20: The Muslim fasting month of Ramadan will begin in Pakistan on Saturday, the official moon sighting committee comprising religious scholars announced.
"Ramadan moon has been sighted, the fasting month will start from Saturday," the committee´s chairman Muneeb-ur Rehman, said in a televised statement late Friday.
Muslims fasting in the month of Ramadan must abstain from food, drink and sex from dawn until sunset, when they break the fast with the meal known as Iftar.
Ramadan in Pakistan, the world´s second most populous Muslim country, starts one day after Saudi Arabia, home to Islam´s holiest cities of Mecca and Medina.
