EC ready to provide extra time for CA polls

KATHMANDU, July 21: The Election Commission (EC) has expressed its readiness to give additional time for making necessary preparations for Constituent Assembly (CA) election, if the government demanded.

Election Commissioner Dr Ayodhi Prasad Yadav has said that the Commission is ready to provide additional time (grace) for making preparations for the election if the political parties agreed on that.

Yadav´s statement comes in the context of the political parties claiming it would be difficult to hold the CA election in the slated date.

Taking part in a face-to-face programme at Reporters´ Club on Saturday, Yadav said, "Election would be possible within the slated time if the political parties came to a common point on the issue."

It may be noted that the government has already directed the EC to hold fresh CA elections on November 22 this year and the budget for the current fiscal year, announced on July 15, has allocated amount for holding the elections.

However, top leaders of the parties have given mixed reactions to the government´s plan of holding the CA elections.

Talking to journalists last week, Chairman of the Rastriya Janashakti Party, Surya Bahadur Thapa, said that it was just a daydream to think about holding the CA election.

Similarly, UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has been stating that the dissolved CA could be revived if the parties agreed on doing so.

Likewise, CPN (UML) leaders Madhav Kumar Nepal, KP Sharma Oli and Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala are in favour of holding the parliamentary elections and announcing a new constitution from that parliament.

Following different views on the CA election, the EC is also not confident that elections will be held.

Dr Yadav refused to talk with journalists on the issue openly. However, he said that elections would not be possible without consensus among the political parties.

The Commission needs 120 days to make necessary preparations for the elections. But, the government has not taken any initiatives to make necessary amendments to laws and remove legal difficulties
