  Reebok goes classic

RASHMI MAHAT

KATHMANDU, Aug 2: Reebok, a popular sportswear brand sold in Nepal by Sports Plaza, is diversifying into a different avatar by introducing a new range called ´classical´. The addition of a new category is expected to provide wider options to both men and women who look for ´American-inspired global product´.

“This year, the store has introduced wide varieties of apparels and footwear with classical looks because every year the company tweaks its designs so as to diversify its product range and provide better options for customers,” said Manju Maharjan, supervisor of Sports Plaza.

Newly introduced classical apparels are available between Rs 1,500 and Rs 5,000, whereas footwear are priced in the range of Rs 1,000 to Rs 10,000.
Reebok products started becoming available in the country since 2000 with the establishment of Sports Plaza that year.

At the time the showroom at the Durbar Marg was spread over 2,200 square feet. The company opened another showroom after two years at Bluebird Mall, Tripureshwor. Sports Plaza is now planning to open two more outlets in Kathmandu and one in Pokhara by the end of 2012.

“It was very hard to conduct business initially as people were not brand conscious and considered Reebok products expensive. The situation had not changed even until five years ago,” Maharjan said.

But aided by mediums like Internet and television, “brand literacy rate” has gone up. “As a result, transaction volume has gone up tremendously compared to that of five years ago,” Maharjan said without disclosing annual revenue of the company.

One of the main contributors to the company revenue has been women. Acknowledging greater appetite among women for fashionable products, Sports Plaza has also created a separate section for ladies at its showroom at the Durbar Marg.

“Demand for women´s apparel has shot up in recent days,” said Dilip KC, manager of Sports Plaza, adding, “Professionals and fitness conscious women are our major customers.” Prices of Reebok women´s collection start at 1,999 and go up to Rs 4,499.

Currently, Reebok stores feature over 100 fresh designs of t-shirts, trousers, shorts and different accessories like caps, socks, summer shawls, among others. Along with these, stores have also showcased over 100 models of footwear under lifestyle and sports categories.
