  Police reopen Manipal Hospital

MANOJ ADHIKARI

POKHARA, Aug 5: The police on Sunday reopened Manipal hospital that was shut down a week ago by doctors demanding salary hike. The police broke the lock with a hammer and opened the Out Patient Department. However, doctors have not resumed their duties.

The District Administration Office, Kaski had warned the doctors on Friday of using force against them if needed. However, the doctors had turned a deaf ear to the warning. Though the doctors had threatened to retaliate, they didn´t. The agitating doctors, however, have said that they would not resume their duties until their demands are met. They have demanded 30 percent hike in their salary.

Administrative officer Ramji Koirala said the administration had no option other than to use force to reopen the hospital. “We are providing security as demanded by the hospital management,” Koirala said.

The team led by DSP Shyam Krishna Adhikari, Koirala , managing director of the hospital PK Chakrawarti had held talks with the agitating doctors for five hours. However, the talks yielded no results.

Agitating doctors have warned of continuing their protests. "We wanted to resolve the issue without resorting to violence but it didn´t work. So we will continue our protest,” said Dr Deepak Koirala, coordinator of the agitating group.
