  Rusticated student seeks redress

KALENDRA SEJUWAL

SURKHET, Aug 7: Madhur Khadka, 15, who was severely beaten up and rusticated from school by the principal on June 24 for not fetching cow dung as instructed, has come to Birendranagar, district headquarters of Surkhet, seeking justice.

"When I requested with the principal to allow my son to continue his education, the principal scolded me," said Khadka´s mother Kalisara, 46, who has come to the District Education Office (DEO), seeking help for continuation of her son´s education.

"It seems like the high and mighty can get away with anything but not poor folks like us," added Kalisara. According to her she has knocked on every possible door but no one has listened to her.

Her son, an eighth grader at Nepal Rastriya Lower Secondary School, Maintada, said that the principal beat him unconscious when he returned to the school after filing complaint at the Mehelkuna Police Station.

The authorities have not taken any action against the principal, Shiva Jung Wali. However, the chairman of the Surkhet District Child Welfare Committee, Purushottam Kunwar, has vowed to see to it that the principal is punished.

Also, an investigation into the matter by the DEO found that the principal had been at fault, but no action has been taken against him. "We do not have powers to punish those who violate child rights," said Surkhet DEO Ram Prasad Upadhyaya.

"Thinking it might be difficult to get the student readmitted at his old school, we are trying to send him to Sharada Higher Secondary School at Sinchu," added Upadhyaya.
