Girl accuses parents of domestic violence; files complaint

SOLUKHUMBHU, Aug 14: A Sherpa girl here has visited the District Service Center for the domestic violence affected, Salleri, seeking help after her parents forced her to marry with a man of her double age.
Yangji Sherpa, 14, visited the Center in need of help following a pressure from her family to marry with Furbarinji Sherpa, brother of Yangji´s sister- in- law from Solukhumbu district.
Yangji is a student at local Bhumeshwari Lower Secondary School, Khyampu.The girl claimed that she was forced to marry with Furba by holding her in captivity for three days as she went to his house to attend her brother´s wedding ceremony.
She demanded action against her parents and other people involved in the case.
"They held me in captivity at Furbarinji´s house when I went to attend my brother´s wedding ceremony. My parents ate and drank alcohol offered by the family of Furba and gave approval for my marriage," Yangji said sharing her woes.
As per the Sherpa tradition, head of the girl´s family have to accept alcohol offered by boy´s family to show agreement for marriage. The victim girl has not been able to continue her education after marriage, it is learnt.
The Center has called the parents of the girl and taken initiative to admit her at the school again, said district coordinator of the Center, Mingmar Doma Tamang.
