KATHMANDU, Aug 17: Doctors at medical institutions across the country have announced to halt all medical services, except emergency, on Saturday and Sunday to show solidarity with Dr Govinda KC´s fast-unto-death which entered fifth day on Friday.

The announcement came following the news about Dr KC´s deteriorating health.

The decision was taken by a meeting of Nepal Medical Association (NMA), an umbrella organization of doctors to pressurize the government.
“The government does not seem serious to respond to Dr KC´s rightful demands. We took the decision after all our attempts to convince the government failed,” Dr Kiran Shrestha, the chairman of NMA, said.

The NMA has called on the human rights organizations, journalists, civil societies and others to support Dr KC in his crusade.

The medical team looking after Dr KC´s health has intervened to insert intravenous drips of glucose on Friday.

“After hypertension worsened, and his muscles started to cramp, we intervened despite his refusal,” Dr Prem Khadga, coordinator of the medical team, said.

Dr KC, a senior professor at the Institute of Medicine (IoM) has been on fast-unto-death since Monday demanding that the appointments at the IoM be made on the basis of merit and seniority instead of political affiliations.

The news Friday evening that the executive council of the Tribhuvan University appointed Dr Prakash Shyami as the dean of IoM could not be independently verified as attempts to contact TU Vice Chancellor Hira Bahadur Maharjan failed.

“The news about the appointment of Dr Prajkash Sayami is a hoax to divert attention from our protest,” Dr Kedar Narsingh KC, a former chairman of NMA, said.
