KATHMANDU, Aug 19: Seventeen student and youth wings affiliated with various opposition parties encircled Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai´s residence at Baluwatar on Sunday demanding his resignation.

The student and youth wings of Nepali Congress (NC), CPN-UML and Rastriya Prajatantra Party have been staging phase-wise protest against the prime minister. They said majority of the public is in favor of dissolution of the present government and formation of a national consensus government.

The groups had surrounded the prime minister´s residence for an hour from 9 in the morning, said Uday Shumser Rana, the president of Nepal Tarun Dal, Nepali Congress´ youth wing. "We also fixed a copy of the result of a mock poll [which showed the PM should quit] at the entrance of the prime minister´s residence and sent another copy to the president´s office," said Rana.

The mock poll organized by the UML-affiliated Youth Association Nepal (YAN) on August 16 claimed to have found over 97 percent voters in favor of a national consensus government as 14,87310 voters among the total 15,26835 opposed the present government. Meanwhile, the poll held by placing 122 booths nationwide found just 1.3 percent voters are in favor of Bhattarai continuing as prime minister. The youth leaders said that 1.29 percent votes were invalid.

"The poll has proved that the public wants a consensus government in replacement of the present government. So, Bhattarai should immediately resign on moral grounds," said Madhav Dhungel, the president of All Nepal National Free Students Union (ANNFSU), which is affiliated to the CPN-UML. The student and youth unions such as Nepal Student Union, ANNFSU, YAN, NSU, ANNISU-sixth, fifth, ANNFSU-United and Rastriya Janashakti Student Union have been staging protest since August 6.
