  Nepal takes on Maldives Thursday

REPUBLICA

KATHMANDU, Aug 23: Nepal will take on South Asian rival Maldives during its first match of the Nehru Cup Football tournament in New Delhi, India.

The match will be an opportunity for Nepal to improve its record against Maldives, which Nepal had not defeated in 13 years. Nepal had either lost with Maldives or played draw. The last time Nepal achieved victory against Maldives was during Eighth SAF Games in 1999, when Nepal had defeated Maldives 2-1 at home ground.

So far Nepal had played 13 matches against Maldives in which Nepal had lost six, won three and played draw in four matches.

Meanwhile, Nepal´s coach Krishna Thapa said his team were eyeing victory against Maldives and host India.

"We are looking for win against Maldives with high morale," Thapa had said before the team´s departure to India. Meanwhile, Thapa who had left Delhi with 21 players had axed midfielder Anil Ojha from the final list.

Maldives will come up with majority U-22 players against Nepal. In the inaugural match on Wednesday, host India beat Syria 2-1.
