'The Expendables 2', starts in Nepal

REPUBLICA

KATHMANDU, Aug 25: Packed with action scenes and action stars, the story of the Hollywood film ‘The Expendables 2’ starts in Nepal.

To introduce the place shown at the beginning of the film, one can see the lettering “Sindupalchowk, Nepal’ on the screen. The group of action stars is seen fighting to rescue a Chinese businessman there.

The team of Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Dolph Lundgren and Liam Hemsworth not only rescues the Chinese businessman but also delivers Arnold Schwarzenegger from Sindhupalchowk. The Chinese businessman is taken out of Nepal by Jet Li in an airplane.

Many people die in the almost 10-minute-long action sequence. The gruesome fight ends up shedding a lot of blood. Some joke that Nepal’s population is perhaps reduced by half.

Rifles, submachine guns, bazookas, helicopters, knives and cannons have been used in that scene. Around 400 liters of fake blood is estimated to have been used.

Though the place is introduced as Sindupalchowk, there are no Nepali characters in the film. The shooting was also not done in Nepal. The film has been shot in Belgium, America and Hong Kong and the Sindupalchowk scene appears to have been shot in a set somewhere.

The Chinese businessman is kept in a dark room by his captors and undergoes a lot of torture in their hands. Stallone’s team comes armed with weapons to rescue him. To show the attack on the captors, Nepali villages are bombed.

Written by Richard Wenk and Stallone, the film is directed by Simon West. Simon’s works include ‘Stallone’, The Mechanic’ and ‘Lara Croft: Tomb Raider’.

The film was made under the budget of US$100 and also stars Jean Claude Van Damme and Bruce Willis.

The sequel is being released after two years.
