KATHMANDU, Aug 26: India won the ICC U 19 World Cup 2012 championship after defeating host Australia by 6 wickets at Tony Ireland Stadium, Townsville, Australia, on Sunday.
Being invited to bat first, defending champion Australia made 225/8 in maximum 50 overs. India made 227 while successfully chasing down the target losing only four wickets with 14 balls remaining.
India skipper U Chand scored 111 not. He clobbered seven fours and six sixes in his match winning 130-ball innings. Besides, lower order batsman S Patel contributed 62.
Australian bowlers J Paris, M Steketee , G Sandhu and A Turner claimed one wicket apiece. Earlier, Australia posted a modest total chiefly built around skipper W Basisto’s solid 87. He hit six fours in his 120-ball knock.
India’s S Sharma took four wickets , while R Singh and B Aparajith claimed all one wicket apiece. India had also won the title in 2000 and 2008, whereas Australia was the winner of the 1988, 2002 and 2010 editions of the tournament.
