Rajbiraj truck operators complain of 'excessive' tax

RAJBIRAJ, Sept 14: Truck operators have protested against the practice of collecting taxes at various Village Development Committees of Saptari district.
During a press meet on Friday, committee of truck operators claimed that they have been forced to pay taxes at three different district offices while transporting sands and gravels. They even threatened demonstration if related authorities didn´t find a solution immediately.
"We will pay tax once, more than that won´t be tolerated," said Samsher Aalam, deputy chairman of the committee.
According to Aalam, truck drivers are compelled to pay tax at three different offices in Kamalpur VDC, Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve (KTWR) and Sapatri District Development Committee (DDC) while transporting sand and gravels from Gangajali river. The river runs through Kamalpur and Fattepur VDCs.
"While driving through Fattepur and Kamalpur VDCs every truck drivers are paying Rs 2130 in taxes which are unnecessary," said Aalam. Truck drivers pay Rs 650 at Kamalpur VDC, Rs 500 at KTWR, Rs 675 at DDC along with Rs 50 as parking charge.
Meanwhile, he informed that trucks retrieving sand from Pauda river have also become the victim of such ´excessive´ taxation. According to him, they pay Rs 500 at Goghanpur VDC and Rs 675 to DDC.
However, Nawaraj Khadka Program Officer of DDC said that collection of tax at various offices were not operated by any of the appointed officers from DDC.
