  SPORTS BRIEFS: Maharjan, Shrestha into second round

KATHMANDU, Sept 28: Miken Maharjan and Regan Shrestha on Friday advanced into the second round of First London Open Snooker Tournament being held in the capital. Maharjan ousted Gopal Rana 3-1 and Shrestha edged past Binod Mahatma 3-2. In other matches of the day, Tika Shrestha saw off Resham Rana 3-1, Jeevan Deula defeated Rudra Sunwar 3-1 and Abhimanyu Dhimal defeated Ganga Thapa 3-1.

Similarly, Nawa Kumar Rai defeated Rajesh Maharjan 3-2, Rajan Gurung beat Bijay Tamang 3-2, Chhopel Sherpa saw off Prabesh Shrestha 3-1, Surendra Gurung defeated Prashant Gauchan 3-2. The other players to emerge victorious were Raj Gurung, Ramkaji Maharjan, Sujan Pun, Bikash Maharjan and Tashi Wangchuk. Second round matches will begin from Saturday.

Deep Jyoti, LA advance

KATHMANDU
: Deep Jyoti, Little Angel´s School (LA) and LRI advanced into the semifinal of the boy´s section of volleyball in the 19th Eicher Gyan Carnival (school level competition) in the capital on Friday.

In the league round of group A, Deep Jyoti edged past Springdale 21-25, 25-15, 29-27 to advance as group winner while the latter secured place in last four as the runner up of the group. LA saw off host Gyanodaya 25-6, 21-25, 25-15.

Under girl´s basketball, Daffodil thumped St Xavier´s 38-4 for quarterfinal place. Similarly, Gyanodaya, Xavier International, and Kathmandu Valley emerged victorious in boy´s basketball. In boy´s football Gyan Shikha thumped Innovative 10-0, GEMS edged past Kathmandu Valley 2-0 and Gyanodaya thrashed Neric 6-0 to book quarterfinal place.

Opel clinches basketball title

KATHMANDU
: Opal School clinched the title of First KU City Inter-school Senior Boy´s Basketball Tournament on Friday. Opal defeated Saipal Academy 42-27 in the final riding on 14 points of Tshering Jhangbu Sherpa. Tshering Shepa of the winning team was declared the most valuable player and The Celebration took home the fair play award. Altogether eight teams had competed in the four-day long event.


Reliance, Ideal Model into final

KATHMANDU
: Reliance International Academy B and Ideal Model School booked final spot on Friday in the Second Inter School Boy´s Handball Tournament being held in the capital. Reliance toiled hard to beat Joseph 9-8 and Ideal struggled past Jugal 10-9.

National swimming from October 6

KATHMANDU
: Nepal Swimming Association is organizing NSA National Swimming Championship from October 6 at the Satdobato swimming pool. The three-day event will feature about 300 swimmers, according to NSA Vice President Mahesh Newa. The players will vie for 58 gold medals in total including 24 in open category and 34 in age categories. The event will also serve as the qualifiers for Asian Swimming Championship to be held in Dubai in November this year.

Rai, Gasai into final

KATHMANDU
: Bivek Rai of host Nepal and Sanjay Gasai of India reached the men´s final of 54-56 kg category in the Manomohan Adhikari Memorial Second International Invitational Taekwondo Championship being held at the covered hall of Dasharath Stadium, Kathmandu. Sujan Sigdel and Subbal Rai secured final spot in men´s 46 kg section. The two-day tournament has 32 gold medals on offer.
