KATHMANDU, Oct 7: Police detained human rights activists and kins of the disappeared people during the insurgency, while they were staging a sit-in in front of Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai’s official residence in Baluwatar, on Sunday morning.

Police arrested them on charge of violating the prohibitory area as they were demonstrating in protest of the government’s recent decision to promote Nepal Army´s Colonel Raju Basnet to the post of brigadier general.

Rights activists and families of the disappeared have been demanding that the government withdraw its decision to promote  Basnet, who has been accused of serious human rights violations during the conflict period.

The government on Thursday had promoted Basnet to the rank of brigadier general despite protests from human rights groups and activists.
