  Gurung sets yet another nat'l record

KATHMANDU, Oct 7: Young talent Shirish Gurung has set yet another national record, clocking 2 minutes 17.10 seconds while completing 200m freestyle on Sunday in the Second NSA Cup Open and Age Group Swimming Championship at the Satdobato Swimming Pool, Lalitpur.

Gurung, who set new national records in men´s 400m individual medley and 200m butterfly of open section on Saturday, broke a 13-year old record of Shyam Bahadur Gurung while claiming men´s 200m freestyle gold in open category.

Shyam Bahadur Gurung had set the national record of 2 minutes 17.45 seconds during the Eighth South Asian Games held in Kathmandu in 1999.

In August, Shirish Gurung had set a new national record in 1500m freestyle, breaking the 28-year-old record. On the occasion, Gurung had completed the distance in 19:48.16 minutes.

Fourteen-year-old Gurung has become youngest Nepali swimmer to set four different national records.

"Shirish is a new talent to emerge after a long period in Nepali swimming," said Wangden Lama, who has been training Gurung for the last 10 years. "He enjoys training sessions and his guardians are supportive," he added.

Meanwhile, Gurung clinched three other gold medals on Sunday in the championship. He clocked 2:47.75 to win gold of men´s open 200m individual medley, while he completed men´s open 100m freestyle in 1 minute 1.78 seconds. He claimed 50m butterfly gold of 13-14 years age-group with a timing of 31.55 seconds.

Meanwhile, Shreya Dhital, Oshina Bharati and Ceila Gurung clinched two gold medals each on Sunday.

Dhital clocked 1 minute 13.34 seconds to win open women´s 100m freestyle, while she claimed 50m backstroke gold in girls´ 15-17 years age group with a timing of 40.10 seconds.

Gurung finished open women´s 100m backstroke in 1 minute 30.48 seconds and open women´s 50 backstroke in 42.65 seconds to claim gold medals.

In girls´ 11-12 age group, Bharati claimed gold in 50m breaststroke and 50m butterfly events.

Tika Ram Thapa clocked 3:7.10 to win men´s open 200m breaststroke, while Gobinda Karki finished open men´s 50m butterfly with a timing of 30.16 seconds for the gold.

Meanwhile, Prabesh Adhikari finished top on the victory stand in open men´s 50m breaststroke completing the swim in 36.18 seconds.
