REPUBLICA

KATHMANDU, Oct 9: At least a dozen CPN-Maoist cadres were injured Tuesday morning when police used force to disrupt a sit-in they were staging outside the prime minister´s residence at Baluwatar.

The agitating CPN-Maoist cadres were demanding that the government revoke its decision to promote Nepal Army (NA) colonel Raju Basnet to brigadier.

Said Ek Raj Bhandari, chairman of the Association of Families of Fighters Disappeared by the State (AFFDIS), "We strongly condemn the government´s misuse of force."

Among the protesting cadres, Ishwor BK, Ambika Acharya and Dhiraj Khanal sustained serious injuries in the incident. Rights activists have been protesting the promotion of Basnet, who was implicated in the torture and disappearance of 49 Maoist cadres from Bhairavnath Battalion.
