UML instructs members not to lobby for CA revival

REPUBLICA

KATHMANDU, Oct 13: CPN-UML has issued strict instructions to its leaders and erstwhile Constituent Assembly (CA) members not to be involved in any activities against the party´s decision to go for fresh elections.

A standing committee meeting of the party on Saturday strictly instructed the party´s erstwhile lawmakers not to lobby for the CA´s reinstatement.

"Former lawmakers comrades are instructed not to attend any gatherings or meetings to lobby for CA reinstatement, not to hold such activities because those are against the party´s decision to go for fresh mandate," read a statement issued after the meeting on Saturday. "And, the comrades are directed to be involved in their defined duties in the respective work areas instead."

The UML´s direction comes at a time when dozens of erstwhile CA members including Chief Whip Bhim Acharya from the party have been actively lobbying for the 601-member Assembly´s revival. On Wednesday, over 150 former CA members from UCPN (Maoist), NC, CPN-UML and over a dozen fringe parties gathered at CA building to lobby for CA revival.

The party had earlier decided that it would be ready to revive the CA only if the parties seal a deal on disputes in constitution writing beforehand. "That is hypothetical for now and seems not viable mainly because of untrustworthy political parties like UCPN (Maoist). Therefore UML is for fresh elections," Puadel told Republica.

Lately, UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has been lobbing for CA revival while leaders from other major parties including Nepali Congress and CPN-UML stand divided.
