  SPORTS BRIEFS: Thapa, Shakya reach quarterfinals

KATHMANDU, Oct 17: Hira Bahadur Thapa and Ratna Kaji Shakya reached the quarterfinals of men´s singles in the Shrestha Construction Open Squash Championship on Wednesday. Thapa defeated Kabir Chitrakar 3-0 while Shakya edged past Chhabi Lal Paija Pun 3-1. Similarly, Binod Ratna Shakya, Prabin Bir Kansakar, Sudip Bahadur Singh, Prem Singh and Amrit Thapa secured quarterfinal berths.

In the women´s section, Krishna Thapa, Nilima Malla and Kshitij Gurung won their respective matches of the round robin league.

Financial support to Rai

KATHMANDU
: Former athletes and Nepali sports lovers residing in South Korea provided financial support of Rs 100,000 to ailing senior taekwondo coach Nandu Kumar Rai on Wednesday. Nepali national football team´s former captain Raju Shakya handed over the amount to Rai amidst a function in the capital on Wednesday. Taekwondo player Raju Chhetri and karateka Rabi Maharjan, who are currently in South Korea, had raised the money there and sent it through Shakya, who recently visited Korea. Rai is suffering from cancer.
