Doctor's 'negligence' blamed for patient's death

BARUN PANERU

DADELDHURA, Oct 29 : A patient at a Dadeldhura-based mission hospital died allegedly due to negligence of a doctor.

The relatives of Laxmi Khathayat, 30, a resident of Girichauka VDC of Doti district, who died while undergoing treatment at TEAM Hospital Sunday night, refused to receive her dead body, demanding compensation and action against the doctor who operated on her. Laxmi´s dead body was lying in the operation theatre of the hospital till Monday night.

An American doctor had conducted surgery on Laxmi after a thorn stuck in her throat. TEAM Hospital´s Chief Bishnu KC has admitted that Laxmi´s death was caused by the doctor´s negligence. According to KC, the doctor did not use a pipe applied to drain pus and other fluids out of body while operating. “The pus seeped into her lungs and caused the death,” said KC. “All our efforts to save her went in vain.”
Binod Khadka, one of Laxmi´s relatives, has alleged that the hospital first did not allow them to take the patient away and shied away from talking to them after the operation went awry. “We took Laxmi to the hospital early in the morning but they did not operate on her till late evening. They did not even let us take her to another hospital despite our repeated requests,” said Khadka. “But after she died, no one was ready to talk to us.”

As tension flared at TEAM Hospital, Chief District Officer of Dadeldhura Rishi Ram Tiwari on Monday tried to broker a deal between Laxmi´s relatives and the hospital management. “Discussions are on. We have not decided anything yet,” CDO Tiwari said. “The guilty will be punished.”
