  Indoor archery championship kicks off

KATHMANDU, Nov 1: Both A and B team of Manang Marshyangdi Archery Club (MMAC), Kaski Archery Association (KAA), Himalayan Archery Club (HAC) and Kirat Welfare Society Archery Club (KWSAC) reached the quarterfinal round of men´s open team event as the First Indoor National Archery Championship kicked off at the National Sports Council Covered Hall on Thursday.

A team of MMAC scored 802 points while KAA garnered 792 points. HAC scored 781 points, KWSAC acquired 647 points and B team of MMAC obtained 579 points.

National champion Jeet Bahadur Moktan and Khagendra Malla reached the second round of the men´s singles recurve event. Moktan of MMAC scored 289 points on Thursday to confirm his place in the last 16, while Malla of KAA scored 278 points.

Likewise, KAA´s Ashim Sherchan, Durga Purja and Mahendra Tangbe and MMAC´s Karma Chhiring Gurung, Ongya Gurung, Urken Phunsok D Gurung, Norbu Gurung and Chitra Lal Hirachan also confirmed places in the pre-quarterfinal round.

Himalayan Archery Club´s (HAC´s) Prem Prasad Pun, Wangel Gurung, Ramesh Bhattachan and Mahesh Thakali as well as Kirat Welfare Society Archery Club´s (KWSAC´s) Balaram Rai and Diwas Rai also secured places in the round of last 16.

In men´s singles standard recurve event, Birendra Gurung (HAC), Dev Pun (Annapurna Archery Club), Hom Bahadur Thapa (Kanchanpur), Anil Bhujel (HAC), Tilak Pun (Magar Samaj), Saujanya Gurung (HAC), Chhatra Bahadur Gharti Magar (Magar Samaj), Samip Thakali (AAC), Saha Bahadur Rana (Magar Samaj), Parichit Shrestha (TIA), Wilber Acharya (TIA) and Aayush Musyaju (TIA) qualified for the pre-quarterfinal round.

Meanwhile, Dil Kumari Bhujel, Renu Tamang, Maya Syangten, Rajya Laxmi Joshi and Manisha Duwa entered into the second round of women´s singles recurve event of the tournament, organized by Nepal Archery Association. Duwa is the archer of HAC, while rests are of KAA.

In women´s singles standard recurve event, Monica Rana Magar (Annapurna), Sarita Tamang (HAC), Saraswati Gurung (Annapurna), Sony Sherpa (HAC), Rashmi Darlami (Annapurna), Akshita Gurung (TIA), Sumitra Shrestha (TIA) and Manavi Neupane (TIA) entered into the quarterfinals.

Former Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal inaugurated the championship amidst a program on Thursday. Altogether 49 archers, including 36 men and 13 women, are participating in seven events in the tournament. The tournament will conclude on Saturday.
