Kaski jail transfers 29 prisoners to other districts
POKHARA, Dec 9: Kaski District Prison recently transferred around two dozen inmates to other district jails following the rise in the incidents of clash among groups of prisoners inside the jail lately. According to the jailer of Kaski prison Ranga Nath Sharma, 29 inmates have been transferred to six different district jails.
The inmates involved in clashes, including leaders of two prisoner groups, have been transferred to district prisons of Parsa, Palpa, Rautahat, Kathmandu, Myadgi and Parbat.
Last month, 12 inmates were injured after two groups led by Chandra Gurung and Kuber Sigh clashed inside the prison.
The probe team formed to investigate the clash had recommended 25 inmates involved in the clash and four others be transferred to other districts. Jailer Sharma also informed that more prisoners are likely to get transferred in future.
Sharma said Gurung and 13 other inmates have been sent to Parsa, while 10 jailbirds along with Singh were relocated to Rautaht district prison on November 28. Later, four inmates were sent to Kathmandu and three each to Myagdi and Parbat district. Meanwhile, the Kaski district prison recently received 14 inmates, 10 from Palapa, two from Nawalparasi, one each from Tanahun and Parbat.
The prisoners in the Kaski jail had chanted slogans against the transfer of Gurung fearing that it would create difficulties in managing monetary dealings which has been taking place inside the prison. Many prisoners have given or taken loans from each other with Gurung as the guarantor in such dealings. The jail administration has said it has not been able to control the monetary dealings taking place inside the prison as it has no idea about how it works. The statement is worrisome as the sporadic clashes inside the jail have been attributed to the misunderstanding arising from these dealings.
The district prison, which has the capacity to house only 60 inmates, is swarming with 345 jailbirds presently. The recommendation of past probe committees to upgrade the physical facility of the prison has been gathering dust since a long time.
