KATHMANDU, Dec 17: Department of Livestock Services (DLS) on Monday made public the names of four quarantine officials who were suspended on Sunday for deliberately allowing containers ferrying illegal chicken consignment from India to enter the country. The containers were transporting chicken for international food chain Kentucky Fried Chicken.
Dr Mohan Dev Lekhak, senior veterinary doctor at Central Animal Quarantine Office, Dr Muni Lal Chaudhary, senior veterinary doctor at Animal Quarantine Office, Birgunj, Dr Dayaram Chapagain, senior veterinary doctor at National avian disease Investigation Laboratory and Dr Hareram Yadav, vetenary doctor at Animal Quarantine Office, Birgunj were suspended for at least two months or until the investigation process is complete, the department said in a press statement on Monday.
“Action were taken action officials as per the existing Civil Service Act in order to make the investigation procedure easier,” said Dr Pardip Chandra Bhattarai, assistant spokesperson at DLS.
A three member investigation committee led by Uttam Bhattarai, joint secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture Development (MoAD) includes Dr Ram Krishna Khatiwada, deputy director general of DLS and Dr Bodh Prasad Parajuli, chief of Central Animal Quarantine Office was formed to investigate the case and provide detail on the imports of chicken into the country, within five days said the statement.
