  Mayanka Rana fights her way into semis

KATHMANDU, Dec 17: Mayanka Rana fought back from a set down to defeat her twin sister Mahika to enter the semifinals of the 11th Jaykar Memorial Junior National Open Tennis Tournament in the U-14 girls´ singles on Monday. Joining Rana in the last four were Bijisha Shrestha, Bibhuti Karki and Anne Mathema.

Mayanka was made to work hard for the victory by her sister in their quarterfinal match held at the Satdobato tennis court. Top seeded Mayanka, who took the lead in the first set, was stunned by Mahika in the second set but Mayanka held on to win the match 6-3, 0-6, 6-1.

Bibhuti Karki also had a hard time defeating Khushi Pandey 6-3, 6-3 in their last-eight match. In another quarterfinal match, Anne Mathema seemed to be cruising to victory but Shivalika Rana staged a remarkable fightback in the second set to win applause from the crowd for some good moves and smart placements. However, Mathema held on to win the game 6-0, 6-3.

Bijisha Shrestha, on the other hand, had an easy route to victory as she defeated Cathy Mathema 6-0, 6-1.

In the U-12 boys´ singles, Samyak Bhushan Bajracharya handed a double bagel to Cyril Satyal to secure a place in the quarterfinals. Renjen Lama also defeated Ashutosh Pahadi by the same scoreline, 6-0, 6-0.

Samrakshak Bhushan Bajracharya also had an easy 6-1, 6-1 win over Sulav Dhital while Pranav Khanal also eased past Sahil Deep 6-1, 6-1 to secure a quarterfinal berth.

In other matches of the U-12 boys´ singles, Nabin Joshi beat Arjan Dhungel 6-1, 6-4, Anish Bade defeated Swaraj KC 6-4, 6-3 and Satyap Ilme saw off Deep Rana 6-3, 6-3.

Dewans Agrawal advanced into the quarterfinals after receiving a walkover from Pradeep Khadka.

In the U-9 girls´ singles, Saloni Tamang defeated Aza Regmi and Shreeja Subedi beat Samriddhi Shrestha.

Likewise, Satya Dhwaj Karki, Rahul Singh, Binaya Batas, Piyush Singh and Adit Subedi won their respective pre-quarterfinal matches while Gazin Jugali, Aditya Subedi and Akiz Rawat earned walkovers.
