KATHMANDU, Jan 9: The general convention of the CPN-Maoist is to start in Kathmandu on Wednesday, with the eyes of the national and international communities focused on what would be its political line - peaceful way forward or armed struggle.
The general convention will be held from Wednesday to Sunday. CPN-Maoist, the faction which broke away from the UCPN (Maoist) last June, is going to hold a general convention after 21 years.
Following the announcement of its general convention, the UCPN (Maoist) had announced that it waas holding its own general convention, in Hetuada by February 2.
"Our struggle programs will be through the people´s movement. I cannot say what would be our compulsions. If forced by the government or the situation, we will be ready for a people´s revolt or people´s war," said Pampha Bhusal, party spokeswoman, when asked what would the party´s political line be.
According to Bhusal, the general convention will endorse the immediate political program for launching a struggle over the issue of national sovereignty. The long-term political program will be formation of a new democratic system in Nepal.
She informed that 1,200 representatives, 400 observers, 100 cultural artistes and 300 volunteers will participated in the general convention.
The party has invited representatives from fraternal parties in various countries including USA, China, Cuba, North Korea, Venezuela, Canada, Italy and India. The inauguration program will be held at the Khulamanch on Wednesday and processions will converge there from seven different points in the capital.
According to Bhusal, the general convention is of some historical importance. First, the general convention is going to be held after 21 years. Secondly, it is going to held after the splintering away from the UCPN (Maoist), alleging that the UCPN (Maoist) main leadership of Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Baburam Bhattarai joined the parliamentary system, abandoning all the achievements of the people´s war. The CPN-Maoist declared the UCPN (Maoist) as ´neo revisionist´ and Dahal and Bhattarai as ´red renegades.´
"With the break away from the UCPN (Maoist), it will set out its political line," said Bhusal. She also claimed that the general convention would be important for finding a solution to the current political deadlock.
Meanwhile, around 3,500 UCPN (Maoist) leaders and cadres joined the CPN-Maoist on Tuesday. General Secretary Ram Bahadur Thapa welcomed them at the party head office at Buddha Nagar.
