KATHMANDU, Jan 25: Police freed 32 activists, who were demonstrating against violence against women, outside the prime minister’s residence in Baluwatar after a brief detention on Friday.
The demonstration was being held to mark one month of the beginning of the Occupy Baluwatar campaign. Among those arrested are journalists Kamala Panthi and Bidushi Dhungel, and rights activist Renu Rajbhandari.
Police took them under control after demonstrators entered the restricted area. They were kept at Ranibari police post.
The campaigners have been demanding an amendment to laws related rape and setting up of fast track courts, implementation of court orders with regard to violence against women and 50 percent reservation for women in government service, among other things.
