Jailed for 170 years, Bajir wishes for death

DHURBA DANGAL

SINDUPALCHOWK, Feb 1: Filled with regret for all the crimes he had committed, the notorious women trafficker Bajir Singh Tamang, who has been sentenced to a jail term of 170 years, said that he wishes to die behind the bars.

On July 11, 2012, District Court of Sindupalchowk had slapped Bajir, who hails from Sikharpur VDC-9, a whopping fine of Rs 1.3 million and the extensive jail term after it found him guilty of selling six teenaged girls in India. This is the longest jail term handed down by Sindupalchowk district court till this date.

"I sold girls from my own district. This crime I committed has become my worst nightmare and I feel overwhelmed with regret. This remorse is killing me from inside," said Bajir, talking to the media persons, who had approached him to develop a film based on his life.

While talking for half an hour in front of the rolling camera, Bajir not only revealed his methods of trapping girls and selling them but also shared how the imposed jail term has opened his eyes.

"I sold the girls knowing fully well that it was a dirty business. I did it for the love of money," said Bajir, during the interview.

Bajir said he doesn´t want to shift to another jail and wants die behind the walls of the same jail of the district.

"I shall spend the rest of my life in the jail and die here. But it pains me to think about my old parents, who have to bear all the troubles in their old age without me," said Bajir.

As per the law, Bajir would have to spend 40 years behind the bars even though he has been sentenced to 170 years.

Bajir will be 82 years old when he completes the term. "I would feel grateful if the court gives me a death sentence," said Bajir.

Bajir grieved over how the sentence has affected his family ties. His second wife has left him and married another man. After the death of his first wife, Bajir had married a second woman, whom he had intended to sell but had fallen in love instead.

"I have imperiled the lives of my old parents and children," said Bajir.

Bajir was suffering from tuberculosis at the time of his arrest, but now his health has improved after regular treatment

Bajir has made it clear that he would not appeal his sentence at a higher court “My jail term will not decrease even if I take the case to another court," said Bajir.

However, Bajir expressed regret over the police´s failure to arrest Dawa Tamang, who had got him into the trafficking business.

"Dawa, who lured me into this dirty business must be caught and punished. He should not be spared at any cost," said Bajir.

Meanwhile, Bajir confirmed the all too familiar practice that some parents in the district sell their own daughters.

Pointing to the case of Tek Bahadur BK, who has been jailed for 12 years for selling his own daughter, Bajir said, "There are many parents like Tek who have intentionally sold their daughters for money."

The district judge of Dumre informed that the courts has ordered Bajir to provide Rs 150,000 each to the six teenage girls sold by him in India.
