MAOIST DOUBLESPEAK?
PM blames India for govt fall

GHANASHYAM OJHA

KATHMANDU, May 12: Prime Minister and chairman of Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) Pushpa Kamal Dahal has charged that India´s “conspiracy” led to the fall of his government.
  • PM had urged high-level Indian envoy to settle army chief row
  • [if gte mso 9]> Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Dahal´s interview to The Hindu: India should have defended civilian supremacy in Nepal
Speaking at the politburo meeting of the party on Monday, he vowed to fight against Indian ´hegemony´. [break´

During the meeting, Dahal told the members that India conspired against the Maoist-led government because he tried to maintain equidistance between China and India.

“Indian government could not tolerate Nepal´s effort to extend its mutual relation with China,” a Maoist politburo member quoted Dahal as saying.

Dahal also said Nepal traditionally maintained closer relations with India than to China, which he tried to change for a more balanced relationship.

Dahal asked the Maoists to protest India´s intervention in Nepal´s sovereignty. Dahal told the members that the country has been divided between those supporting military supremacy and those backing civilian supremacy.

He charged that Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and other parties, backed by India, were bent on establishing military supremacy.

“We must not compromise our stance on civilian supremacy,” Dahal told the meeting.

The meeting also decided to intensify protests through both the streets and the parliament against the ´unconstitutional´ move of President Dr Ram Baran Yadav.

“The president must apologize for his unconstitutional move and the government´s decision to sack Katawal must be implemented before the formation of next government,” said Maoist spokesperson Dinanath Sharma, following the meeting.

He said the Maoists won´t let the process of forming the next government enter into the parliament until the president apologizes.

As part of intensifying the protests, the meeting decided to organize massive protests in Biratnagar, Dhangadhi, Nepalgunj and Kathmandu on May 17.

The party has been disrupting the parliament ever since Dahal stepped down on May 4. “We will show our people´s power through the streets and the parliament against the unconstitutional practice,” said Sharma.

A total of 45 politburo members expressed their views on the current political situation.

“All the members supported the prime minister´s decision to step down though other political parties had not yet proved majority in the parliament to form the next government,” said Devendra Poudel, a politburo member.

He said the members commended the party chairman for not ´surrendering´ to Indian pressure.

The members also criticized the party leadership for failing to achieve significant success in the government. “Some members said the party couldn´t perform effectively and failed to achieve major success in the government,” said Poudel.

He said the meeting decided to move ahead united by correcting the past mistakes.
