RAJBIRAJ, Feb 12: Family members of the two alleged rape victim girls have complained that police and administration are not helping to arrest the rapists.
Two girls -- one 11 years old and the other 10 years old -- from Pipra Purba VDC in Saptari district were allegedly raped by two unidentified youths while the girls had gone to collect dry animal dung to Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve (KTWR) on Friday.
"We had filed complaint with the police immediately after the incident. But, even after three days, police have not taken any initiative to investigate the incident and arrest the guilty," said the father of one of the victimized girls. The family members of the victimized girls also alleged that police are not taking the incident seriously.
"We had informed the police on Friday itself, but we are yet to receive the medical report on the girls," said the father of the second victim girl. "I inquired in the area police office on Sunday but they said they have yet to receive the medical report from Rajbiraj," he added.
Nevertheless, Saptari district police spokesman Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Govinda Adhikari said police need medical report to ascertain if it was rape or not. "Only report of the medical examination of the alleged rape victim girls will bring the reality to the light," DSP Adhikari added. Moreover, police are finding it difficult to detain the alleged rapists as the girls said they cannot identify the perpetrators.
According to family members, the two victim girls who had gone to KWTR near their village to collect dry animal dung were suddenly attacked and rapped by two unidentified youths. Police Inspector Rajendra Basnet informed that the alleged victim girls, who are under the care of their parents themselves, are in a state of shock.
Rape incidents in the district are on the rise and this is 9th incident in the last 10 months.
Abhasetu Singh, a rights activist working in the district, said that women continue to suffer because the perpetrators in most cases go unpunished and the legal provision regarding rape is flawed.
