KATHMANDU, Feb. 11: Celebrations of the New Year (Snake New Year) of the Tamang community began with much fanfare in the capital on Monday. Different cultural programs were organized in Tundikhel on the occasion of the 2849th Dul Lhosar.
A large number of people from the Tamang community thronged the venue of the program.
Former Chairman of Nepal Tamang Ghedung Parshuram Tamang claimed that Tamang community is one of the oldest indigenous groups in the country.
During the progarmme, coordinator of 2849 Dul Lhosar Main Organizing Committee Kum Bahadur Yonjan released a poetry anthology entitled ´Duiri Phuiba Dahudong´ and musical album ´Chhar Ding´ (New Year) by Dhak Bahadur Ghising.
Earlier, extending best wishes on the occasion, speakers of Tamang community urged the members of their community to rise for their rights.
Artistes also performed different songs, music and dances. Similarly, Tamang recipes, costumes and objects portraying the identity of the community were put up for exhibition and sale.
Political leaders including UCPN (Maoist) general secretary and Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Posta Bahadur Bogati, Nepali Congress leader Dr Ram Sharan Mahat and CPN-Maoist secretary Dev Gurung among others extended best wishes to the Tamang community.
