  Sugarcane farmers end protests

SANTOSH SINGH

SARLAHI, Feb 11: Agitating sugarcane farmers have withdrawn protest programs of the last two weeks after sugar mills agreed to purchase sugarcane at Rs 481 per quintal.

Kapil Muni Mainali, president of the Federation of Sugarcane Farmers´ Associations, said protests came to an end following intensive meeting held on Sunday night in Birgunj.

“We reached an agreement after 10 hours of dialogue with sugar mills and will resume sugarcane supplies immediately,” said Mainali.

During the talks, farmers remained firm on their demand that sugarcane price be fixed at Rs 483.70 per quintal as per the agreement reached in the past with sugar mills. On the other hand, sugar producers did not budge from the price of Rs 479.17 per quintal.

“The agreement was reached after we expressed readiness to reduce sugarcane price by Rs 2.70 per quintal. Sugar producers also showed flexibility,” said Mainali.

Farmers had launched series of protests demanding that domestic sugarcane price be aligned with the price in Indian bordering towns.

The protests, which brought sales of sugarcane to a halt, caused huge chunk of freshly harvested and standing sugarcane to gradually dry up.
