  Second wins for Goldengate, Gurukul

KATHMANDU, Feb 18: Goldengate and Gurukul registered their second consecutive victories on Monday in the First Kirtipur Cup Basketball Tournament, the first event being held in double round robin format. Host Naya Bazar Club, Kirtipur also emerged victorious during the event being held at its home court in Naya Bazar.

Goldengate edged past WhiteHouse 71-66 to hand the latter its second defeat in as many matches. Karma Gurung topscored for Goldengate with 19 points.

Similarly, Gurukul crushed Nepal Army Club 94-45 as Sadish Pradhan stole the show with the highest 34 points for Gurukul. The first match between Army and host Kirtipur scheduled for Saturday was postponed due to rain.

Host Naya Bazar toiled hard to beat NASA 87-72 riding on 23 points from Ayush Singh. It was NASA´s second defeat in the tournament. NASA had lost its opening match to Goldengate.

Goldengate took the first quarter 18-10, but WhiteHouse bounced back in the second quarter to take it 24-15 and cut the deficit to one point. Goldengate then widened its lead by taking the third quarter 25-13 and held on for a narrow win despite going down 13-19 in the last quarter.

In the other match, Gurukul dominated the show against Army and led all four quarters 27-8, 23-10, 26-13, 18-14 to register a comfortable victory.

Host Naya Bazar took the first and third quarters against NASA 25-13 and 29-19 respectively while the fourth quarter was tied at 22-22. NASA took the second quarter 18-11. Naya Bazar will take on Gurukul in its next match on Friday.

The top four teams at the end of the double round robin will make it through to the semifinals. Altogether six teams are competing in the event.
