  Dalit family ends hunger strike

REPUBLICA

MAHENDRANAGAR, Feb 22: A family of dalit community in Sittad VDC of Baitadi district broke hunger strike on Friday after local administration, political parties and rights activists in the district assured investigation into the dispute over water between dalit and non-dalit community.

Hariram Sarki and his wife including his three daughters arrived at the district administration office in Baitadi district and started fast-unto-death from Thursday after members from the non-dalit community in the VDC allegedly barred 10 dalit households from drawing water from a spring.

The non-dalits captured the spring after they had to share water from a tank filled by the spring, accused Hrirm Sarki.

According to Ramesh Koli, a dalit rights activist, "The family halted the hunger strike after an agreement was reached among the DAO, district police and other stakeholders to visit the disputed spring for resolving the issue.

Koli also said the DAO had earlier told the Sarki family to resolve the matter on their own and share the water through cooperation.
