  SPORTS BRIEFS: Daffodil, NIMS clinch basketball titles

KATHMANDU: Host Daffodil School, which had reached the final in three different events, succeeded in lifting the trophy only in senior girls´ basketball on Sunday in the Daffodil Cup Inter-school Football and Basketball Tournament held at its premises in Kapan.

In the girls´ basketball final, Daffodil edged past Valley Public 26-21. Frezilla Tamang of the host was declared the most valuable player while Dolly Tamang took home the highest scorer award. Srijana Khadka of NIMS got the best sportsmanship award while Everest School took home the fair play award.

In the senior boys´ basketball final, NIMS edged past Daffodil 66-48. Sameer Tamang of NIMS won the most-valuable-player award. Lopsang Tamang and Minraj Tamang of the host won the highest scorer and best sportsmanship award respectively. Gyanmala School won the fair play award.

Kathmandu Valley was crowned champion in the junior boys´ football as it defeated Daffodil 2-1. Bikram Oli of the host was declared the best player, Dipta Gurung won the best goalkeeper award and Lepon Gurung took home the best sportsmanship award.

Actor Rajesh Hamal distributed the prizes to the winners and runners-up.

Rato Bangala, Angel´s Heart advance
KATHMANDU: Rato Bangala and Angel´s Heart School advanced into the girls´ quarterfinals on Sunday in the Valley Public Second U-14 Inter-school National Basketball Tournament being held at the covered hall of National Sports Council, Tripureshwar.

Rato Bangala crushed Baylor Academy, Kavre 21-0 riding on 12 points from Nira Deula Shrestha. Angel´s Heart eased past Third Eye 27-11 with Pratiksha Pun scoring the highest 13 points for the winning side.

Innovative, Valley Public, Everest, Pennwood and TIA also secured quarterfinal spots in the girls´ event along with Daffodil that enjoyed a walkover. Innovative defeated The New Summit 22-14 riding on 14 points from Trishna Khatri. Soniya Limbu contributed seven points as Valley Public toiled hard to beat Mount Annapurna 12-11. Everest saw off Chandbagh 12-4, Pennwood overcame Baba 8-0 and TIA ousted Rara Hill 24-12.

Under the boys´ section, Manakamana defeated Ideal Model School 35-24 to enter the quarterfinals as the winner from Group C. Jeeren Pun contributed 17 points for the winning team. Ideal Model also advanced as the group runner-up
