KATHMANDU, Feb 24: A squad of Metropolitan Police Range Office, Hanumandhoka on Sunday arrested five teenage boys in connection to the murder of Aayush Shrestha, 19, of Shreeghal Bangemudha-28, Kathmandu, within 18 hours of the incident. Shrestha was a 12th grader at Morgan College in Basundhara.
Shrestha and his classmate Anish Shahi were, allegedly, chased and stabbed by the group of boys at 3:30 pm Saturday. While Shrestha succumbed during treatment at Bir Hospital, Shahi is undergoing treatment at the same hospital.
The accused were made public on Sunday during a press conference at Hanumandhoka. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rana Bahadur Chand, who heads the Metropolitan Police Range Office Kathmandu, said preliminary investigation has shown that the murder was committed in a fit of anger.
"The investigation is under way to find out whether there was a criminal motivation behind the murder. Two of the accused are still on the run," Chand said.
According to the police, a quarrel erupted between Shrestha and Shahi and the group of boys, allegedly, after one of them tripped on Shrestha´s leg and fell to the ground.
According to the police, Aamir Lama, 17, of Okhaldhunga, the main accused in the murder, was given a knife by Naresh Shahi, 18, of Asan, after the dispute took an ugly turn. The other arrested are Sandesh Tamang, 17, of Nuwakot, Nabson Maharjan, 17, of Thahiti and Aman Jaisawal, 19, of Rautahat. Lama and Shahi worked in a fancy store whereas Tamang, Maharjan and Jaisawal are all 11th graders at Annapurana College, Thamel, NCLS College, Paknajol and Hillbert International College, Kalimati respectively.
According to the inspector in charge of the investigation, Manjil Mukarung the police had questioned about sixty youths till late night Saturday. While two of the accused were arrested on Saturday, three were nabbed on Sunday.
One accused of Banudevi Murder case arrested
The police on Sunday arrested absconding DP Lama, 25, of Raakathun-5 of Ramechhap district, an accused involved in the murder of Banudevi Rana, 69, of Naxal on November 11. Two woman involved in the murder are already behind the bars and Arjun Shrestha, an accomplice in the murder, was released on bail after being fined Rs 25,000. Junita Thapa aka Jenisha, 22, and Kalpana Giri, 34, were arrested for the murder of Rana, who was found dead with a serious head injury.
Jenisha and Kalpana had stricken Rana´s head with a baseball bat and then stifled her using a pillow. The police had seized Rs 48,417, US $325, gold bangles, ear rings and necklace and mobile sets that were stolen from Rana´s home.
