  Sanothimi Campus clash injures 12

REPUBLICA

KATHMANDU, Feb 27: A dozen of students sustained injuries in a clash over a minor dispute at Sanothimi Education Campus, Bhaktapur on Wednesday.

The situation went out of control after students aligned with various political parties got involved in a debate on observing Martyrs´ Sports Week, scheduled to be held in the campus.

The student leaders of All Nepal National Independent Student Union-Revolutionary (ANNISU-R), the Nepal Student Union (NSU) and the ANNFSU attacked each other with iron rods and sharp weapons, said NSU coordinator Ranjit Karna.

“The dispute arose after ANNISU-R said that it wanted Free Student Union to take the ownership of the sports event, but the other two groups raised voice against it,” said Karna.

The ANNISU-R cadres suddenly came carrying weapons and started beating members of other groups, said Anita Poudel, a bachelor second year student who was at the college when the incident occurred at around 8 in the morning.

The ANNISU-R had swept the FSU poll held at the campus last time. However, the opposition student cadres wanted to host the program, as the Tribhuvan University has set the date for fresh poll on April 6.

He claimed that more student leaders of the NSU and the ANNFSU got injured when the revolutionary activists thrashed them after forcefully entering into the classrooms where they were hiding. He also accused that the activists entered in the classrooms and physically assaulted the students affiliated to rival unions.

However, the ANNISU-R cadres claimed that the NSU and ANNFSU leaders intervened at the last hour when they had completed all preparations to mark the sports week.

Meanwhile, the security personnel deployed from the Metropolitan Police Circle, Thimi informed that no arrests have been made as most of the cadres involved in clash were injured and rushed to hospital. Police personnel were deployed at the campus throughout the day to prevent further clashes.
