REPUBLICA

KATHMANDU, July 21: The total solar eclipse will be completely visible in Nepal from Biratnagar and east but doctors warn it should only be viewed through certified filters.

“Viewing the solar eclipse with naked eye is harmful and can irreversibly impair vision by burning the retina. We call it solar retinopathy,” says senior ophthalmologist Dr Sanduk Ruit.

Arrangements have been made at Kathmandu Mall, Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), Khumaltar and Taxila Academy in Baluwatar to observe the eclipse that enters Kathmandu at 5:46:09 and ends at 7:45:29.

“The eclipse can be viewed completely in the east and the percentage drops gradually in the west. It will be 96.6 percent in Kathmandu and 80 percent in Mahendranagar,” says astronomer Jayanta Acharya.

Acharya says Chandragadhi will witness the longest total eclipse in Nepal at 3 minutes and 48 seconds while maximum darkness in Kathmandu will occur at 6: 42: 41.
