Seven killed, three dozen injured in Udayapur bus accident

MITHILESH YADAV

(Updated with details)

KATHMANDU, Aug 11: At least seven persons were killed and over three dozen injured when a passenger bus en route to Katari from Ghurmi village veered off the Betani-Katari Highway and fell 500 meters below at Hureli of Sirise Village Development Committee (VDC) in Udayapur district, Tuesday afternoon.

Seven bodies have been recovered so far, and police suspect that more people might have been killed in the fatal accident. "The rescue operation is still going on and we may find more bodies," Udayapur police Chief Pashupati Dotel said. Of the deceased, three are males, three females and one child, but their identities are yet to be established.

Nine of the seriously injured have been admitted to BP Koirala Memorial Health and Science Foundation in Dharan, while 23 are receiving treatment at the local hospital in Katari.

The police and locals are searching for more persons with lanterns and torch lights at the site that is around 17 km away from Katari, said Chief District Officer of Udayapur Madhusudan Burlakoti quoting police officers involved in the rescue operation. He hinted that the death toll may rise. The police had been facing challenges in the rescue operation as it was already dark and the terrain difficult, Burlakoti added.

The ill-fated bus (Ba 1 Kha 7461) coming from Ghurmi village on the Okhaldhunga-Udayapur border was overcrowded with passengers as it was the last bus to leave for Katari. The accident occurred at around 4:30 p.m. Eyewitnesses said the driver lost control of the bus while taking a turn. Six of the passengers, who were on the bus roof, jumped to the ground safely even as the bus veered off the road.
