KATHMANDU, Sept 10: The Nepal Police Club lifted the trophy under women´s category Thursday in the National Women´s and Men´s league Volleyball Tournament held at the covered hall of the Dasharath Stadium.
In what turned out to be the final match between the Police Club and Western Region, Police had to struggle until five sets 19-25, 25-22, 25-18, 19-25, 15-13 to register the victory. Keeping on its unbeaten run, the police accumulated 12 points in six matches, while Western Region was merely able to accumulate 11 points to be contended as runner up.
The Eastern Region with 10 points, PLA Sports Club with nine points, Central Region with eight points, Far-western Region with seven points and Mid-western Region with six points secured the third to seventh spots respectively.
The top four teams under women´s category will bag a cash prize of Rs 50,000, Rs 25,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 10,000 respectively.
Under men´s category, continuing with their unbeaten record Employment Creation Service (ECS) Club bagged the second round league title. ECS added 12 points from six matches, while the runner up PLA gained 10 points from the same number of matches played. Both of them have now secured their spots for the super league round. Nepal Police, Nepal Army, APF and Far-western Region have already secured places in the super league round qualifying from the first round match held on Feb\March.
Five chess teams jointly on lead
KATHMANDU, Sept 10: Kantipur Chess Club, Machhindra Club, Makhan Chess Club and two teams of the hosts - Himalayan Chess Club ´A´ and ´B´ are jointly at the top of the table with four points apiece after completion of second round on Thursday in the ongoing Himalayan Cup First National Club Team Championship Rating Chess Tournament being held at Lagankhel.
In course of beating Far-western Region 4-0 sets, Kantipur´s players -- former Nepal champion Nabin Tandukar beat Takendra Raj Pathak, Uttam Raj Thapa beat Keshav Prasad Gautam, Manish Hamal beat Dirgha Raj Joshi and Rajan Chhetri ousted Basanta Rawal.
Similarly, Surbir Lama, Rijendra Raj Bhandari, Niraj Niraula and Shyam Shrestha defeated Madhav Pradhan, Gyanendra Prasad Shrestha and Indra Kumar Basnet of Nepal Chess Club to register 4-0 sets victory.
From Makhan, former Nepal champion Punyaman Karmacharya, Sajan Pandey, Rajendra Prasad Shrestha and Sujendra Prasad Shrestha eased past Purushottam Chaulagain, Prakash Nepal, Ramesh Adhikari and Harischandra Hota.
The first choice host team Himalayan ´A´ beat Friends of Nations 2.5-1.5 sets. Wilam Lal Shrestha and Rajendra Bajracharya saw off Balaram Napit and Rajendra Sijkhola, while Keshav Shrestha played a draw with Niranjan Prajapati. National champion Badrilal Nepali lost with Ganeshman Duwal.
For team ´B´ of the host, Prem Krishna Maharjan, Bikash Kuluju and Bijay Shrestha downed Bantawa Gautam, Anil Koirala and Bhumi Gurung while Lawa kumar Shrestha of the host was beaten by Ram Bahadur Bista to lead 4-1 set.
Likewise, Patan Jaycees defeated Patan Chess Association 4-0 sets to accumulate three points from the second round match. Pokhara Chess Club, Nepal Chess Club, Dolkha, Kathmandu Chess Club, Chatensil Samaj, Bukas Club, Lalitpur District Sports Development Committee, Far-western Region and Friends of Nation have added two points so far.
Ratnajit, Pankaj in badminton semis
KATHMANDU, Sept 10: Ratnajit Tamang, Pankaj Chand, Ram Singh Chaudhary and Sajan Tamrakar entered the semifinals under men´s singles category winning their respective matches on Thursday in the ongoing Nationwide Open Badminton Tournament being held at the Nepal Police Club, Bhrikutimandap. The tournament is being held on the occasion of police day 2066 by the Nepal Police.
Similarly, in women´s singles Puja Shrestha and Saradevi Tamang set the title clash winning their respective semifinal matches.
In men´s doubles category, the pairs of Indra Mahata and Bishal Pradhan, Pradeep KC and Santosh Moktan, Ratnajit Tamang and Bivek Shrestha, Surya Thapa and Bharat Shrestha, Bikash Shrestha and Kishor Rana, Ram Singh Chaudhary and Jeetendra Sharma, Pankaj Chand and Rajeev Dahal, and Bimal Shreshta and Ram Rai advanced into the quarterfinal round winning their respective matches.
