KATHMANDU, Sept 14: Minister for Energy, Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat, who returned home from a seven-day visit to Germany, said that the German government is going to help Nepal set-up a thermal plant by the end of the year.
While speaking to mediapersons at Kathmandu airport Monday morning, Mahat said, "As requested by Nepal, the German government has given a nod to assist in setting up a thermal plant." He said that the Ministry for Energy will submit a proposal to this effect to the German government shortly.
Stating that thermal plant is "not an attractive option" for Nepal as it is an expensive venture, Mahat said that foreign assistance is a must to set up thermal plant in the country. He also informed that the private sector in Germany is interested to invest in up to 100 MW in Nepal´s hydro-power sector.
Pointing at the already existing German investment in Nepal´s Middle Marsyangdi Hydropower Project in Tanahun District, Dr Mahat said that "more cooperation was sought" from German private sector. during his visit.
