UNOG DG invites Pushkar in Geneva
The Director General of the United Nations Office at Geneva (UNOG) Sergei A Ordzhonikidze last week invited Nepali cyclist Pushkar Shah, who has cycled around the world spreading the message of peace and hope, to his office.
Shah has traveled around 150 countries around the world during his 11-year journey and is planning a “Peace Expedition” to Mount Everest, during which he intends to carry the UN flag presented to him by Ordzhonikidze and the flags of the countries that he has visited.
Shah said the UN flag embodies the values and principles which he had strived to put at the center of his expedition and represents all member states including those that he has not been able to visit, according to a statement received here.
“The message of peace and hope conveyed by the cyclist is at the very heart of the work of the United Nations,” the statement quoted Ordzhonikidze as saying.
Ordzhonikidze also found symbolic significance in Shah´s planned ascension to the top of the world´s highest peak at a time when scientists have warned of the devastating effects of global warming and climate change.
