145 Lawyers Detained Briefly
  KATHMANDU, Feb 24: Police on Friday arrested around 145 lawyers, who were staging a protest rally near Singha Durbar area to exert pressure on the political parties for timely promulgation of the new statute.

Police rounded up the lawyers on the charge of breaching prohibited area. “We arrested the lawyers for trying to enter the prohibited areas. They were released later,” said DSP Dhiraj Pratap Singh, spokesperson at Metropolitan Police Range, Hanumandhoka.

However, Bijay Moktan, general secretary of Nepal Bar Association (NBA) accused the police of arresting them for no reason and refuted the claims by the police that they were trying to enter prohibited area.

“We were marching peacefully along the footpath to organize a gathering at Shanti Batika,” Moktan said. Some 500 lawyers had participated in the rally organized by Nepal Bar Association (NBA), the umbrella organization of lawyers in Nepal.
