Maternal And Child Nutrition Plan To Begin From Sept 20
KATHMANDU, Sept. 17: The National Planning Commission (NPC), seven ministries and key stakeholders on Monday signed a declaration of commitments to accelerate improvement of maternal and child nutrition in Nepal.

The seven ministries include Health and Population, Agriculture and Development, Education, Urban Development, Federal Affairs and Local Development, and Children and Women’s Affairs, and Finance.

The ministries have developed a multi-sector nutrition plan 2013-2017 for accelerated reduction of chronic malnutrition in women and children.

The plan would be launched on 20th September with the technical support of the UNICEF and with funding from the European Union (EU) through its Regional Maternal and Young Child Nutrition in South Asia project.

About 41 per cent of children under-five are suffering from stunting or low height for age in Nepal, a clear indication of chronic under-nutrition.

It is estimated that at least 35 per cent of child deaths are caused due to under-nutrition.

During the programme, the NPC Vice-Chairman Deependra Bahadur Kshetry said that the government would work to ensure that the nutrition capacity of the government was enhanced to deliver evidence-based direct and indirect nutrition interventions through both health and key non-health sectors.
