Jail Meant For 20 Inmates Housing 60 |

RUKUM, Nov 9: The prison in Khalanga, the headquarters of Rukum district, meant for 20 inmates is currently housing 60. Inmates say they find it difficult to find space to sleep at night. Also the roof leaks during the rains and there is serious problem of drinking water and toilet.
“We don´t have big demands. We just want enough sleeping space and basic amenities,” said an inmate Nandaram Khadka. “Every night we struggle to find a place to doss,” he added.
Last year the wall separating the male and female sections had collapsed. Mended in makeshift fashion, the wall cannot withstand any stress, informed Khadka. There are 52 male and 8 female inmates.
“More than 12 inmates are living in a narrow room,” said Khadka.
Drinking water has been made available only for two hours a day inside the prison, he said. There are only two toilets for the 60 inmates.
“The local administration office has been informed about the sorry state of the prison but they don´t take the problems seriously,” said Khadka.
Arjun Bhandari, assistant chief district officer, blame lack for budget for the state of affairs. “Their demands and complaints are understandable but the authorities have not provided necessary budget for repair and maintenance,” said Bhandari. |
