KATHMANDU, April 24: The Supreme Court (SC) has issued a short-term interim order in the name of the government and Tribhuvan University (TU) not to take any action against Narayan Khanal, the chief legal advisor of TU.

SC Justice Til Prasad Shrestha's bench issued the order not to take any action against legal advisor Khanal for the time being and called both the plaintiff and the defendants to appear in the court for discussions.

A few days ago, the Ministry of Education published the report of the Medical Education Probe Commission (MEPC) and directed action against those whose names were included in it.

Khanal, TU’s legal advisor, approached the SC saying that action was recommended against him without evidence or reason. After the initial hearing on his writ petition, the SC granted a short-term interim order.

Khanal has named 18 bodies including the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, the Ministry of Education, Tribhuvan University, and others as the defendants in the case, demanding that the action taken against him should be undone.

Accusing Khanal of giving a wrong opinion to the officials of TU regarding providing affiliations to colleges, the Medical Education Commission had recommended that Khanal should not be appointed to a government or constitutional position in the future.

Khanal has been maintaining that false accusations had been made against him without any evidence.
