SURKHET, Dec 17: Necessary preparations are being made to set up the provincial assembly of Province 6 in Birendranagar of Surkhet district. Birendranagar is the proposed capital of the province. The regional administration office has identified the existing office buildings that can be used by the provincial assembly, the governor, the chief minister and other provincial ministries.

A five-member taskforce headed by Keshav Prasad Upadhyay of the Regional Administration Office has submitted a proposal on office placements for the various provincial government bodies. The taskforce  has recommended the building of the education training center  for housing the provincial parliament and as office space for the speaker, the  vice-governor and other officials

Likewise, the building of the regional  forestry training center has been recommended for the offices and residences of the governor and the provincial secretary. The  regional administration office and the regional post office have been proposed for the offices of the chief minister, the chief secretary and the provincial council  of ministers.

The taskforce has recommended the buildings of the regional offices as these offices are to be disbanded.

The district public health office will house the office of the home ministry while the district soil conservation office will be used by the ministry of economy. Likewise, the regional agriculture office and the district agriculture development office will be used by the agriculture and land management ministry. The regional roads and divisional irrigation offices will likewise be used by the infrastructure development ministry.

“We have already managed the needed physical infrastructure for the capital of province 6,” said taskforce coordinator Upadhyay. “We have requested the center to provide the necessary budget for repairs and maintenance.”

Along with Upadhyay, the membership of the taskforce includes  district coordinator committee official Tanka Lamichhane, urban development and building divisional engineer Jhanka Bahadur Thapa,  Birendranagar Municipality official Dipen Subedi and regional administration section officer Hit Prasad Paudel.

However, the repair and maintenance work does not come cheap. According to the taskforce, it will cost around Rs 280 million to repair and maintain the existing buildings chosen for housing the provincial government.

“We have proposed a budget not only for the repair of buildings and other structures, but also for repairing  nearby roads,” informed Upadhyay. “We have not yet received a decision from the central authorities,” he added.
