KATHMANDU, Dec 31: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal and leaders of the United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) have agreed to table the constitution amendment proposal in Parliament.

In the meeting held at the Prime Minister Pushapa Kamal Dahal’s official residence in Baluwatar on Saturday morning, the leaders took this decision to this effect.

The leaders involved in the meeting have said that the efforts will be taken to submit the amendment bill through consensus. If the parties did not arrive at consensus, the amendment bill would be submitted unilaterally.

“We have agreed to table the bill in the upcoming House meeting,” UDMF leader Keshav Jha, who was involved in the meeting, told Republica Online.

Dahal asked the leaders to take the amendment process forward in such a way that the bill would be passed through a majority of votes in Parliament.

The government will announce the date for election only after tabling the constitution amendment bill, Dahal asserted in the meeting.

Prime Minister believes that if the constitution amendment bill were tabled in Parliament, it could help the government bring the UDMF leaders on board the election process.

UDMF leaders had announced protest programs after the amendment process remainied on hold.

UDMF leaders had held talks with the ruling parties on Friday. In the meeting Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba had assured the UDMF leaders saying that the government would endorse the constitution amendment bill at the earliest.

Deuba is for tabling the constitution amendment bill and election related bills simultaneously.
