KATHMANDU, May 28: Brushing aside allegations that Nepal plays one neighbor against another, Prime Minister KP Oli has said that Nepal will never do such things with India or China to gain advantage.

Responding to questions raised by 82 lawmakers in the House of Representatives regarding the government’s policy and programs on Sunday, Prime Minister Oli said Nepal will not use one neighbor against another.

Prime Minister Oli mentioned that Nepal’s relations with India had improved exceptionally in recent months. He informed the parliament that the field office of the Indian embassy in Biratnagar was shut down, and that his government has reached agreement with India to make joint inspection of the inundated areas in the border during the rainy season, and to review the 1950 Peace and Friendship Treaty that is widely deemed as “unequal” for Nepal. 

Prime Minister Oli also said that his government will bring cross-country railway in the country within five years. Besides unveiling the east-west and north-south railway and metro rail in the Kathmandu Valley, the prime minister also said that the government intends to operate steamer in Koshi, Karnali and Narayani rivers. 

Prime Minister Oli also highlighted the achievements made by his government in the last 100 days. He mentioned that ending the public transport cartel, busting gold smuggling racket, ending power outage, bringing long-closed airports into operation and expediting construction work of various international airports were some of the major achievements of his government. 

Replying to a query regarding the demand for constitution amendment, Prime Minister Oli said that the government is committed to bringing amendments to the constitution on the basis of “need” and “justification”. 

“We have never said that the constitution won’t be amended. But some people are spreading rumors that the constitution won’t be amended,” he said, while addressing the demand of Madhes-based parties. “Please come forward to suggest issues for amendment. Let us discuss on those issues.”

On the occasion, Oli also said that the government had expediting various development projects in order to realize the slogan of his government — “Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepali.” Stating that the government has been working with the vision of economic development, the prime minister asked the opposition parties to have patience for some time to see the results.
